Welcome to June's Travel Club!

In June we find ourselves meeting at Trax Record Store in Santa Monica, California - the perfect location to start our Pretty in Pink journey!

Released in 1986 this is the best (in my humble opinion) coming of age films of the time, a John Hughes classic.

I think if I were to choose a film which influenced my teenage years and future, I would choose this one hands down.

It is about a girl, Andie played by Molly Ringwald, who doesn't fit in with the social cliques of the school.  She is her own person and at times feels lonely because, well, she's just not one of those pretty girls. However, she does have the support of her best friend Duckie, another outsider, unique, gorgeous and utterly faithful to Andie.

And so we meet at Trax Records where Andie works and shares her thoughts and problems with the fabulous owner and friend Iona.

Andie meets Blane, one of the popular cool kids who is drawn to her uniqueness but the problem is that Andie is literally from the wrong side of the tracks and their social differences create discord with the shallow minds of Blane's middle class friends.

When Blane invites Andie to the High School Prom and she can't afford to buy a dress she designs and makes her own.

At this time my dream was to work in fashion and textiles and at school had the best textiles teacher who encouraged us to design and make our own clothes, deconstructing old items to create new, dreaming up Tulip skirts paired with bodices and so forth.

It was the 80's and Vivienne Westwood was at the height of her career, as film like this was gold for teenage girls in the 80's and so a yarn had to be dedicated to this film and of course Andie.

If you haven't seen this film I really recommend that you watch it. Of course it's a high school romance but we are all cheerleaders of Andie's and love her creativeness and ability to be herself.

I would love to know what you think.

And here's the QR code for the sound track, enjoy!
